Fresher resume in India: writing project lines and choosing personal details
How freshers in India can write project lines that show their own part, which personal details to leave off, and a one-page skeleton to copy.

Looking for the overall layout first? Our resume format for freshers guide covers the section order, what to leave out of the old format, Word or PDF, and how engineering and non-engineering graduates adapt it. This article goes deeper on three things that guide only touches: writing project lines, deciding which personal details to include, and a one-page skeleton you can copy.
What a fresher resume has to prove
Without a job title to point to, your resume has to show three things another way:
- Ability: you can do the work, shown through projects, coursework, internships and tools you have actually used.
- Effort: you finish things, shown through results, certifications and activities you took responsibility for.
- Fit: you understand the role, shown by putting the most relevant evidence first.
If a line does not show ability, effort or fit for this job, it is probably taking space from a line that would. For most freshers, one page is enough, and it is the length we recommend. That is ROLIVA's guidance, not a rule; some campus placement cells and employers set their own format, and theirs wins.
An annotated one-page skeleton
Copy this outline into a blank document and replace every bracket. The notes after each dash are for you; delete them.
[YOUR NAME]— plain text at the top of the page, not inside a header.[City, State] · [Phone] · [Email] · [LinkedIn or portfolio link]— one line.- Summary:
[Degree] graduate seeking a [target role] role. Built [one relevant project] using [two or three tools].— two lines, no adjectives you cannot prove. - Education:
[Degree, specialisation], [College], [University] · [Start year]–[End year] · [CGPA, optional]— thenClass XII: [Board], [Year]andClass X: [Board], [Year]on short lines if you include them. - Projects:
[Project name] · [Month Year]followed by one or two lines:[Problem]. [Your part, starting with a verb] using [tools]. [Result you can show].— two to four projects, the most relevant first. - Internships:
[Role], [Organisation] · [Month Year]–[Month Year]followed by one to three lines on what you did and what came of it. - Skills:
Languages: [ ] · Tools: [ ] · Domain: [ ]— only what you could use in a test. - Certifications:
[Certificate], [Issuer], [Year]. - Activities:
[Role], [Club or event], [Year]: [what you organised or delivered].
If something does not fit on one page, cut the weakest project or activity before you shrink the font or the margins.
Writing project entries that show what you did
A project line works best when it answers four questions in order: what problem, what was your part, what tools, and what came out of it.
Use this pattern:
[Project name]: [problem it solved]. [Your specific part, starting with a verb] using [tools]. [Result you can show].
The result does not need to be a percentage. "Deployed for the department's lab bookings", "presented at the college tech fest" or "repository with setup instructions" are real results. If you did measure something, include the number and know where it came from. If you worked in a team, say what you did, not what the team did; an interviewer will ask.
Avoid listing a project only by its title. "Library Management System" says nothing about you; what you built and used does.
Personal details: what Indian resumes often include, and what to skip
Many Indian resume samples still include a photo, date of birth, gender, marital status, father's name, languages known, and a "Declaration" line at the end with a signature. These are habits, not requirements. For most private-sector applications, they use space that your projects could use, and they share personal information an employer does not need at the screening stage.
Our suggestion:
- Usually leave out: photo, date of birth, marital status, father's name, religion, and the declaration line.
- Keep if relevant: languages you can work in, if the role needs them, and your current city, since many roles are location-based.
- Follow the form: some government, PSU and campus forms ask for these details separately. Give them there when asked.
For contrast, the UK's National Careers Service says plainly in its CV sections guidance that a CV "should not include your age, your date of birth, whether you're married or your nationality". That is UK guidance, not Indian law, but it reflects the same idea: the resume is about the job.
Format rules that keep it readable
Applicant tracking systems turn your file into text and fields. Greenhouse, one of the major vendors, lists the formatting that commonly breaks that step on its help page about unsuccessful parses, including tables, headers and footers, columned layouts, graphics or photos, image-only uploads, and name and contact details placed in a header, footer or text box.
So, for a fresher resume:
- One column, no tables or text boxes.
- Standard headings: Education, Projects, Internships, Skills, Certifications.
- Contact details as normal text at the top of the page body.
- Real text, not a scanned image or a designed graphic.
- A file well under 2.5 MB, which is the size above which Greenhouse says it cannot parse a resume.
Our article on how applicant tracking systems read your resume explains the parsing step in more detail.
Freshers' FAQ
One page or two? One, for nearly every fresher. Canada's Job Bank advises job seekers in general to limit a resume to two pages and says an employer takes an average of 30 seconds to skim one. Two pages is a ceiling for people with years of experience; with less history, one page keeps the strongest evidence in view.
Photo? Not needed for most private-sector roles. Add one only when an employer asks.
PDF or Word? Send what the employer asks for. Otherwise a DOCX or a text-based PDF both work in common systems; see PDF or DOCX.
CGPA below 7, should I include it? It is your choice unless the form asks. If you leave it out, make sure the projects section is strong.
No internship at all? Then projects, coursework, hackathons, freelance work and volunteering carry the evidence. Put them in Projects and Activities with the same "problem, your part, tools, result" pattern.
Should I add every skill from the job post? Only the ones you have. Job Bank's advice is blunt: "Lying on your resume is never a good idea."
