Account executive cover letter template (with how to fill it in)
What a account executive hiring team looks for in a letter, a fill-in template with every placeholder marked, and prompts to find your own evidence. Nothing in it is a real person’s letter.
What a account executive hiring team looks for in a letter
01
A track record you can state precisely
Sales leaders read an account executive’s letter for numbers, and they check them later. State your results the way your employer measured them: quota attainment, revenue closed, deal size or win rate, with the period. Only include figures you could show from a report or explain in an interview. Vague claims such as “consistently exceeded targets” are read as having no number to share.
02
The right segment and sales motion
Account executive roles differ by market and cycle. Make clear whether you sold to small businesses, mid-market or enterprise, inbound or outbound, transactional or multi-month cycles with procurement and security review. Match your examples to the posting; an enterprise team will want evidence that you can manage multiple stakeholders over a long cycle.
03
Discovery and qualification
Hiring managers look for sellers who qualify well and do not chase deals that will not close. Mention the qualification approach you used, how you found the real business problem and who signed off, and one example of walking away from or re-scoping an opportunity. This shows forecasting discipline, which managers value as much as closing.
04
Pipeline generation and process
Show how you build pipeline as well as close it: prospecting, working with sales development, partners or marketing, and keeping the CRM accurate. A sentence about forecasting accuracy or pipeline coverage, if you can support it, tells the reader you are manageable and predictable.
05
Fit with the product and buyer
Finally, connect what you have sold to what this employer sells. Similar buyers, similar price points or similar technical complexity all count. One specific sentence about the employer’s market, based on the posting, shows preparation, the same habit you would bring to a first sales call. If you are moving between industries or segments, say which skills carry over, such as running multi-threaded deals or handling procurement, and be honest about what you would need to learn quickly. Managers prefer a credible plan to an overstated match.
Fill-in template
Replace every highlighted part. Sending bracketed text is the most common template mistake.

Evidence prompts for a account executive
Answer these from your own record before you fill in the template. Use the answers you could talk about in an interview.
What was your quota attainment or revenue closed, how was it measured, and over what period?
Which segment, buyer and sales cycle length do you know best?
Which deal did you win through discovery, and what was the real business problem?
When did you disqualify or walk away from an opportunity, and why?
How much of your pipeline did you source yourself, and how?
How accurate were your forecasts, and what habit kept them accurate?
What do you already know about buyers like this employer’s customers?
