Financial analyst cover letter template (with how to fill it in)
What a financial analyst hiring team looks for in a letter, a fill-in template with every placeholder marked, and prompts to find your own evidence. Nothing in it is a real person’s letter.
What a financial analyst hiring team looks for in a letter
01
Analysis that informed a decision
Finance hiring managers want to know whether your numbers changed what someone did. Describe one piece of analysis and its use: a forecast that reset a budget, a variance you explained that led to a cost action, an investment case that was approved or rejected. Say who used it (a budget holder, the CFO, a board committee) and what they decided. Do not share confidential figures; describe scale in ranges or relative terms you are free to use.
02
Planning, forecasting and close experience
Postings for this role usually mention FP&A, budgeting, forecasting, month-end close or management reporting. Be specific about which cycles you ran or contributed to, how often, and for what size of business or cost centre. If you shortened a close or reporting cycle, say what you changed.
03
Modelling that others could trust
Readers look for evidence of accurate, auditable models: clear structure, documented assumptions, checks that catch errors. Mention the tools you built them in (Excel, a planning system, SQL, Power BI) and how you made them usable by others. A model that survived audit or handover is good evidence.
04
Business partnering
Many finance roles now sit close to commercial or operational teams. Show how you explained numbers to non-finance managers, challenged an assumption in a budget, or helped a team understand the drivers of its costs or revenue.
05
Accuracy and control
Finance teams care about getting it right. Mention reconciliations, controls or process fixes that reduced errors, and relevant qualifications (CFA, ACCA, CIMA, CA or CPA progress) briefly and only if they are real. Because the reader expects precision from a finance candidate, check every figure, date and name in the letter twice. A single wrong number in a financial analyst’s cover letter undermines the claim of accuracy more than any other mistake. Equally, keep the language plain: explain the effect of your work in business terms, such as cash, cost, margin or risk, rather than finance jargon.
Fill-in template
Replace every highlighted part. Sending bracketed text is the most common template mistake.
