What a marketing manager hiring team looks for in a letter

01

Results tied to business goals

Marketing leaders read for evidence that your work moved something the business cared about: pipeline, sign-ups, revenue, retention or awareness in a defined audience. State the goal, what you did and the result as your team measured it, with the period. Be careful with attribution; saying a campaign “contributed to” a result you can support is stronger than claiming all of it.

02

The right channel and specialism

Marketing manager roles vary widely: demand generation, content, lifecycle and email, brand, events, performance or field marketing. Read the posting and lead with the matching area and channels. Name the platforms you have actually run campaigns in and the budget scale you managed, if you can share it.

03

Audience understanding

Strong candidates show they know who they are marketing to. Mention how you learned about the audience, such as customer interviews, sales conversations or data, and how that changed a message, a channel choice or a segment. This tells the reader you would not simply copy last year’s plan.

04

Testing and measurement discipline

Hiring managers value marketers who test and learn. Describe an experiment you ran: the hypothesis, the change, how you measured it and what you did next. Mention the analytics or reporting you used, and be honest if a test failed; a clear learning shows judgement.

05

Working with sales, product and agencies

Finally, show cross-team work: agreeing lead definitions with sales, launching with product, briefing designers or agencies, and managing timelines and budgets. One example of aligning teams around a launch or campaign tells the reader you can deliver without friction. Your letter is also a writing sample, so keep it clear and specific. Avoid listing every channel you have touched; pick the two that match the posting and show depth in them. If you managed people or agencies, say how many and what you were accountable for, because many marketing manager roles are player-coach positions where you both plan and execute.

Replace every highlighted part. Sending bracketed text is the most common template mistake.
