Product and UX designer cover letter template (with how to fill it in)
What a product and UX designer hiring team looks for in a letter, a fill-in template with every placeholder marked, and prompts to find your own evidence. Nothing in it is a real person’s letter.
What a product and UX designer hiring team looks for in a letter
01
A letter that points to the portfolio
Design hiring managers decide largely from your portfolio, so the letter’s job is to make them open it and know where to look. Link the portfolio in the first paragraph and name the one or two case studies most relevant to this role, with a sentence on why each one fits. Make sure any password or access instructions are included.
02
Problem framing and process, briefly
Reviewers want evidence that you design from a problem, not from a visual style. In a sentence or two, describe how you framed a problem, what research or data shaped it, and how your design changed as you learned. Avoid listing every method; show the reasoning that connected research to a design decision.
03
Outcomes and honest attribution
Product and UX design is collaborative, so be precise about your contribution: what you led, what you shared with a researcher, product manager or engineer, and what shipped. If the work changed a measurable outcome, state it only as far as you can support it. If it did not ship, say what you learned; reviewers respect that more than inflated claims.
04
Fit with the team’s product and maturity
Read the posting for clues: a design system, a complex workflow tool, a consumer app, accessibility requirements, or a first designer hire. Connect your experience to that context. A designer used to large design systems and a designer who builds the first one bring different strengths, and the letter should say which you are.
05
Working with engineering and accessibility
Finally, hiring teams value designers who make handoff smooth and who design for everyone. Mention how you worked with engineers on feasibility and detail, used or contributed to a component library, and checked contrast, focus order or screen-reader behaviour. One concrete example is enough. If you have worked with design tokens, prototypes engineers could inspect, or documented interaction states, say so, because these reduce rework after handoff and reviewers notice designers who think about build quality.
Fill-in template
Replace every highlighted part. Sending bracketed text is the most common template mistake.
