What a product marketing manager hiring team looks for in a letter

01

Positioning you wrote and tested

Product marketing hiring managers look first for proof that you can find the one thing a product should be known for, for one audience, and get others to use it. A letter that says “I created messaging” says little. Describe a positioning or messaging framework you wrote: the audience, the alternative they were comparing you with, the claim you chose, and how you checked it (win-loss interviews, sales calls, message testing, page performance). If the positioning later changed because the evidence said so, that is a strength to mention.

02

Launches with a clear owner and outcome

Most postings for this role ask for launch experience. Hiring teams want to know what kind of launch, how many teams you coordinated and what you were accountable for. State the tier or size of launches you ran, the assets you owned (pricing page, release notes, sales deck, enablement session), and the measure you agreed with the product team before launch. Do not claim revenue you cannot attribute.

03

Sales enablement that sales actually used

Product marketers are judged by whether the field uses their work. If you built battlecards, demo narratives or objection-handling guides, show how you learned what sales needed and how you knew the material was being used: requests, call recordings, feedback, win rates you can support.

04

Customer and market insight

Show how you gather insight, not just that you value it: customer interviews you ran, analyst or competitor research, product usage data you read with an analyst. One concrete insight that changed a launch or a message is worth more than a list of methods. If you segmented a market or defined an ideal customer profile that sales and marketing then targeted, describe the evidence behind it and how it was used.

05

Writing that reads like the product team’s partner

A letter for this role is itself a writing sample. Keep it tight, specific and free of buzzwords. Hiring managers notice when a candidate who claims to write messaging cannot write a clear first sentence about themselves.

Fill-in template

Replace every highlighted part. Sending bracketed text is the most common template mistake.

Dear [Hiring manager’s name, or “Hiring team”],

I am applying for the [Job title] role at [Employer]. The posting highlights [requirement 1, e.g. “positioning and messaging for new features”] and [requirement 2], which describe the product marketing work I have done at [Organisation].

For [product or feature], I wrote the positioning for [audience], built on [the evidence you used, e.g. a number of customer interviews or win-loss notes]. I then [how the messaging reached customers: pages, campaigns, sales material], and [a result you can support, e.g. a change in sign-ups, adoption or deal conversations].

I also ran the [size or tier] launch of [product or feature], coordinating [teams involved]. I owned [assets or decisions you were responsible for], and afterwards [what you measured and what it showed, or what you changed for the next launch].

What draws me to [Employer] is [something specific about its market, product or customers from the posting or its own material]. I would welcome the chance to discuss how I could support [team or product named in the posting].

Kind regards,
[Your name]
