Trane Technologies is seeking an experienced Lead Product Design Engineer to join our Trane Commercial Systems organization as a key member of the product development team which works closely with other Engineering teams, such as the Test Lab, Manufacturing and Product Management to create competitive designs for Trane Commercial Water-to-Water HVAC product lines, encompassing both heating and cooling functionalities. The selected individual must have the technical expertise to support and lead product design projects, product validation testing, drive to root cause for quality & reliability issues, interpret technical agency standards and conduct projects in accordance with standard engineering and stage gate product development process practices.
What you will do:
- Lead the development of HVAC refrigeration systems to meet performance, regulatory, quality, and cost requirements.
- Lead the evaluation of the technical feasibility of product and internal requirements, and drive the design and selection of robust, cost-effective components while developing clear engineering specifications.
- Establish the technical strategy for compliance and serve as subject matter expert on regulatory codes, including ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, UL, CRN, and Seismic certifications (IBC/OSHPD). Understand and apply applicable regulatory codes and standards, such as UL, CRN, Seismic (IBC/OSHPD), and ASME requirements.
- Create, review and maintain the engineering documentation package, including technical reports, lab test results, drawings, and specifications, to ensure it reflects the design intent and that all required documents are completed on time to the satisfaction of internal customers.
- Lead component- and system-level Design Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (DFMEA) and execute resulting risk mitigation plans to ensure all technical knowledge gaps, structural/thermal risks, and laboratory failures (FRACAS/8D) are fully closed to prevent quality escapes.
- Meet the needs of internal and external customers, through documenting, understanding and prioritizing customer requirements.
- Serve as the primary engineering subject matter expert to solve advanced design challenges, evaluate the appropriateness of products for various applications, and provide critical technical guidance to global technology centers.
- Lead and coordinate engineering work packages across cross-functional teams to guarantee that system performance, long-term reliability, product cost, and development schedule milestones are successfully met.
- Influence and provide deep technical support and analysis into component- and system-level reference design strategy and execution, working in close cooperation with functional engineering and project teams.
- Evaluate complex, special, and advanced engineering problems by working independently as an expert with minimal supervision. Serve as subject matter expert on capabilities to improve existing systems and processes.
- Collaborate with and influence engineering and project teams to achieve common objectives.
- Provide technical support and guidance to laboratory technicians, manufacturing engineering, suppliers, technical service, and operations.
- Mentor junior engineers by providing technical guidance, encouraging professional development, and fostering sound engineering judgment.
- Overnight travel (less than 5%).
What you will bring:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and at least 8+ years of engineering or product design experience is required. Master’s Degree in Engineering is a plus.
- A Professional Engineering license may be beneficial but is not essential.
- Able to function as a core team member on cross-functional product engineering teams and deliver on select design elements for projects.

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills – ability to communicate up, down, and across the organization.
- Ability to deliver and lead technical designs to meet project and product requirements.
- Self-motivated and disciplined. Able to collaborate with and influence others.
- Background in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is preferred.
- Experience with UL, CRN, Seismic (IBC/OSHPD), and ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) is preferred.
