The Job

CNN is building its next generation of products and experiences, powered by a cloud-native platform built from the ground up. The New Business team sits at the forefront of this effort—identifying, designing, and launching new product opportunities that will define CNN’s future.

This role spans the breadth of engineering disciplines, from tuning globally available databases to building immersive front-end user experiences, all in service of bringing innovative new products to market quickly and at scale.

We are looking for engineers who are comfortable across the stack and interested in solving unique and challenging problems.

Primary Responsibilities

Lead the architecture and implementation of robust, scalable backend systems, including API design, data modeling, and service infrastructure that powers new product development.

Contribute to the architecture and implementation of front-end experiences that integrate seamlessly with backend services, with a focus on performance and scalability.

Participate in code and architecture reviews and champion best practices for the organization by defining and evolving engineering standards.

Work primarily in modern JavaScript using AWS services and mentor peers in those languages and tools.

Stay abreast of industry trends and announcements; understand how changes can impact the business and raise concerns and/or propose solutions to mitigate risk.

Code with passion for software engineering and a strong sense of ownership for the code that you and your team write.

Fail up, learn from research and experiments, and ultimately choose the best solution to support company objectives.

Follow a progressive development methodology, moving from proofs of concept to prototypes to production releases.

Requirements

BS degree in Computer Science or a related field, with 8+ years of relevant experience.

Proven record of driving initiatives that involve changes in engineering culture through evangelism and structured processes.

Strong experience designing, deploying, and operating applications on AWS, with solid command-line proficiency and familiarity with Git and Docker in AWS-based pipelines.

Extensive experience with modern JavaScript, building responsive UIs and scalable services with contemporary frameworks, state management, and API integration.

Ability to review company goals and lead teams toward success through discussion with engineering peers, proposals, and breaking solutions into meaningful tasks to execute or delegate.

Deep industry experience with modern development technologies and hands-on familiarity with both client and server technology, including a solid understanding of common software data structures and algorithms.

Passion for professional growth and continued development along an individual contributor path.

Nice to Haves

Experience working on Kanban/Scrum teams and with project management tools.

Active participation in the open-source community.

Experience with interviewing and talent acquisition.

How We Get Things Done…

This last bit is probably the most important! Here at WBD, our guiding principles are the core values by which we operate and are central to how we get things done. You can find them at www.wbd.com/guiding-principles/ along with some insights from the team on what they mean and how they show up in their day to day. We hope they resonate with you and look forward to discussing them during your interview.
